Announced in 2005, the encyclical of Pope Francis: Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home, is a dramatic appeal to change the attitude towards the environment and to take action to save it. The analysis was carried out from the viewpoint of ecolinguistics, and the criterion of the so-called environmental adequacy. At the center of attention was the problem of anthropocentrism, which for ecolinguists is the main “contamination ” of the language and the source of improper relations between man and nature. During four decades of his service in the Church, Valentin Felixovich Voino-Yasenetsky (Archbishop Luke of Simferopol and Crimea) delivered numerous sermons, most of which were recorded. Later, they began to appear in the form of publications and became the object of research by representatives of various scientific disciplines. The aim of the paper is to analyse the stylistic methods Krzysztof Grzywocz uses in talking about values in his lectures published in the book W duchu i przyjaźni [In spirit and friendship]. It is the whole book, six hundred pages of his collected works, but in particular the one-hundred-page long chapter entitled “The Value of a Human Being”, which is the focus of this paper. The multilayer and interdisciplinary approach to values could be observed in those texts. The article is devoted to sublimity as one of the rule shaping religious discourse (especially in Christian religious tradition). In the first part the author presents three ways of understanding of the term sublime/sublimity, which have developed during historical reflection on this category: sublimity as a grand style (one of the three rhetoric styles); as a grand (high) speech (Pseudo-Longinus); as an ambivalent experience of dread and fascination (Rudolf Otto), that arouses in the believer feelings of numinous.
